Gillian Ayres, CBE RA (1930-2018)

Gillian Ayres was an British artist. She is best known for abstract painting and printmaking using vibrant colours, which earned her a Turner Prize nomination in 1989.

She studied at Camberwell School of Art and held a number of teaching jobs where she became friends with painters such as Howard Hodgkin, Robyn Denny and Roger Hilton whom all inspred eachother.

Gillian Ayres is the most significant British female abstract artist. Trained at Camberwell. Her first solo exhibition was at Gallery One in London in 1956. The following year she was commissioned to produce a large- scale mural for The South Hampstead School For Girls. By the turn of the decade, in her early 30’s, she had established a considerable presence in British Art and in 1963 her paintings were included in the seminal Exhibition of British Painting at The Whitechapel Art Gallery.
