Lees was an Australian landscape painter. He studied at Melbourne University, then in Paris and came to London in 1905 to study at the Slade School of Art. He was friends with Augustus John and John Dickson Innes.

Capel-y-ffin is in the Valley of the River Honddu on the Monmouthshire/Herefordshire border. The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared there and a religious community, where Eric Gill and David Jones worked, flourished in the 1920’s.
