The exuberant colour demonstrates Heron’s allegiance to Bonnard and Matisse and, of course, his knowledge of contemporary American abstract painting. A serious leg injury in 1967 restricted Heron’s ability to work on a large scale and instead he turned to smaller works on paper in gouache – which he considered autonomous works and not sketches. This picture epitomises the complex arrangement of floating colours of these works – the colours of the subject listed in bold capitals on the reverse.
