The exuberant colour demonstrates Heron’s allegiance to Bonnard and Matisse and, of course, his knowledge of contemporary American abstract painting. A serious leg injury in 1967 restricted Heron’s ability to work on a large scale and instead he concentrated on smaller works done in gouache on paper, which he considered to be autonomous works and not sketches. This work epitomises the complex arrangement of floating colours of these works – the colours of the picture listed in bold capitals on the reverse.
