Sir Terry Frost, RA (1915-2003)

Terry Frost was a painter and printmaker, who lived in Newlyn, Cornwall and was associated with the St Ives School of Art. Born in Leamington Spa, Frost did not begin painting until after the 1940’s. During his army service in World War II, he met and was taught by Adrian Heath while a prisoner of war. Subsequently, he attended Camberwell School of Art and the St. Ives School of Art. In 1951, he worked as an assistant to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

His work is widely collected and is included in many prominent public and private collections including that of the Deutsche Bank, the Yale Center for British Art and the collection of the late David Bowie.

This picture was done in Yorkshire where Frost was Gregory Fellow at The University of Leeds between 1954-57. Although firmly committed to Abstraction there is frequently an erotic aspect to Frost’s painting and a case can be made that this is one of ‘the sexy little nudes’ that the artist writes about creating.
