Gilbert Spencer RA (1892 – 1979)

Spencer was a British painter of landscapes, portraits, figure compositions and mural decorations. He worked in oils and watercolour. He was the younger brother of the painter Stanley Spencer.

The inscription connects this delightful sketch to Spencer’s exhibit at the 1966 RA Summer Show Tennis at Ealing from the 5:37 Train (Exhibition no 611). 1966 was the Year Spencer fell out with The Academy over the circumstances surrounding a failed Commission and resigned his membership.
Gilbert Spencer is Stanley Spencer’s younger brother (11 months his junior).
