Lawrence Toynbee was born in London and studied art at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford. He went on to teach art at several schools and colleges, with his own work gaining interest in the 1940’s when his paintings of sporting events and works depicting scenes at London railway and underground stations became popular. He had solo shows at the Fine Art Society and his work is held in the collection of the National Portait Gallery.
