Literature: Mark Hodgkin (ed) Eliot Hodgkin Catalogue Raisonne (online)

Born at Purley-on-Thames, near Pangbourne, Berkshire, into a Quaker family related to Roger Fry, Eliot Hodgkin was a cousin of the abstract painter Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017). He was educated at Harrow School and began his artistic life at the Byam Shaw School of Art, continuing at the Royal Academy Schools.
The catalogue of the recent exhibition of the artist’s work at Waddeston describes the attraction of Hodgkin’s still lives : ’’The artist’s special gift was to make the viewer look afresh at a common object...it is not only his exquisite technique but equally the careful, almost obsessive ‘ placement’ of an object whether alone or in relation to another one nearby’’.
